There are some things you never knew about nutrition. Every food has their fun facts, and we will now let you know a couple of them. Don’t take it too seriously though…they’re FUN facts after all!
#1 Carrots
Carrots were originally white or purple. Then a yellow carrot appeared through mutation and the familiar orange carrot was bred from it.
#2 Tomatoes
The biggest tomato fight in the world happens each year in a small Spanish town of Buñol. “La Tomatina” is the name of the festival and it involves somewhere around 40.000 people throwing 150.000 tomatoes at each other. That should be fun!
#3 Chili peppers
In Japan there’s a type of pepper called shishito. This kind is usually about as mild as a bell-pepper – except for the case when it’s not! One out of every ten of these peppers will be pretty spicy. They’re not spicier than a jalapeño, but still hot enough so you can play pepper roulette and make it a fun game of chance.
#4 Eggplants
A study published in 1993 showed that eggplant has by far the highest level of nicotine out of any vegetables. Wait, nicotine? – It’s only a small amount and there’s no need for concern. You would have to eat between 20 and 40 pounds of eggplant to consume the amount of nicotine you’d get from smoking one cigarette.
#5 Cucumbers
The term “cool as a cucumber” actually comes from the cucumber’s ability to cool down the temperature of the blood. They are very popular in facial regiments because of their properties that are easing facial swelling
#6 Celery
The ancient Romans considered celery an aphrodisiac and they might have been right. It contains the pheromone androsterone, released by men’s sweat glands to attract women.
#7 Cabbages
If you’re looking for a veggie for a low calorie diet, cabbage is at the top of the list. One cup of cabbage only holds about 15 calories, so it’s definitely a weight-loss food.
#8 Beans
Beans can be made into burgers, cakes, pies, fudge, drinks, muffins, jewelry, furniture (bean bag chairs), toys and musical instruments.
#9 Asparagus
White asparagus is grown underground and because it never sees the sunlight, it does not go through photosynthesis and it doesn’t turn green.
#10 Onions
Ancient Egyptians worshipped onions, believing their spherical shape and concentric circles within symbolized eternity. In fact, onions were often placed in the burial tombs of pharaohs, as they were believed to bring about prosperity in the afterlife.
Well, now you know it! Eat your veggies! :)
